Dansimetre sıvıların yoğunluğunu ölçmeye yarayan alete verilen isimdir. Hidrometre genellikle camdan yapılan ampulden çıkan bir silindirik gövdeye sahiptir. Bu ampule cıva ya da kursunla ağırlık kazandırılır. Test edilecek sıvı yavaşça ve serbestçe yüzecek seviyeye gelene kadar silindirin içine boşaltılır. Sıvının yüzeyinin ulaştığı nokta not edilir. Genellikle kökün içinde bir ölçek vardır. Yani direk olarak yoğunluğu okuyabiliriz. Ölçtüğümüz sıvıya bağlı olarak ölçek çeşitleri vardır. Hidrometre, sütün yoğunluğunu, su ile şeker karışımının yoğunluğunu ölçmek ya da alkolün yüksek seviyelerinin ölçülmesi gibi farklı kullanımlar için kalibre edilebilir.
